Brendan was always a happy boy. He had a smile that could light up a room. He loved to make others laugh and smile. Brendan loved to draw and had quite an artistic talent. Brendan loved the critters – our cats and dogs – and found comfort from them when he was sick. One of my favorite pictures of Brendan is shortly after he had a seizure and he was curled up in the recliner with his fleece blanket and our dog, Maggie, on his lap.
Brendan’s friends called him “Sparky,” a nickname I hated. When his friends would call and ask for Sparky, I’d answer, “There’s no one here by that name,” and hang up the phone. A moment later they would call back and sheepishly ask for Brendan. It became a running joke.
On October 1, 2007, Brendan gave me a hug and kiss, told me he loved me, and went to bed. If I had known it would be my last Brendan hug, I would have held on forever. But how very blessed I feel to know that the last words that passed between me and my son were "I love you." What more could a mother ask for?
Brendan returned home to Heaven very suddenly and unexpectedly on October 2, 2007. He died from complications due to a seizure. We all miss him very much, but he is now in God's hands, forever in our hearts.
